A US lawyer, known on TikTok as ‘domhdc’, has gone viral after cautioning students against becoming ‘lawfluencers’. She argues that BigLaw and social media do not mix well. The lawyer, who is 25 and works at a BigLaw firm, warns that aspiring lawyers shouldn’t risk their legal reputation on TikTok after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on law school.
Specifically, she advises those considering BigLaw to reconsider creating legal content and trying to be influencers, as she believes these two professions do not mix.
She has witnessed associates being fired over their lawfluencing activities and thinks it’s not worth the risk. The TikTok video has garnered significant attention, with over 2.5 million views, 250,000 likes, and nearly 3,000 comments, including responses from well-known UK lawfluencers. Henry Nelson-Case, known as ‘That Corporate Lawyer’, humorously responded, suggesting he should have seen the video earlier.
Chrissie Wolfe, a lawyer and content creator, posted a response video explaining how her YouTube channel has positively impacted her legal career. However, some commenters, like Arisa Amara, a Hiring Manager in Big Law, agreed with the lawyer’s message, while others advised serious career-minded individuals to stay off TikTok. Despite the controversy, many pointed out the irony of domhdc’s own TikTok presence while advising against it.
